Macmillan White Christmas Dip – Christmas Day

Every year, lots of mildly crazy, wonderful human beings throw themselves into the sea for the sake of raising valuable funds for Macmillan Caring Locally.

Macmillan Caring Locally is a small Charity which was established in 1974 to build the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital, and to support it in partnership with the NHS. Although they share the Macmillan name they are not connected to the national Charity Macmillan Cancer Support. Donations that we receive are used to fund the care of our Patients at the Macmillan Unit, and those who are under our care living at home in our community.

Dorset Children’s Foundation

You might have heard us mention the Dorset Children’s Foundation – our charity partners – in the last few weeks since we started working with them. In a short space of time, we have grown very fond of them and we’re increasingly amazed by their energy, determination and what they have achieved in helping local families.

We went along to their Boscombe shop to chat with Patsy, Adrienne, Jayne, Kitty and her mum Lisa. We’ll let them do the talking, please take a moment to watch this short video. Big hugs x

Charity dinner at Urban Reef – 21st November

If you would like to help us raise funds for the DCF and enjoy a night out at Urban Reef, now is your chance. We are hosting a dinner on the 21st November and tickets are available now at £25 each with all profits going to the charity.

Chef Wayne is working on a special set menu and asking local suppliers to donate ingredients so we can give more money to the DCF and staff are volunteering to work for free. On the night there will be live music from Alex Deutsch, a raffle to win prizes and Mark will chat informally with Patsy about why she and Scott set up the charity, the families they have helped and plans for the future.

Big Sea for Creative

Free shared working space for local freelancers

creative-spaceAs more people look for the work life balance, Urban Reef is offering free work space to freelancers and those working away from the office this winter.

The first and second floor are open to those wanting a creative space with sea views.

Mark Cribb – owner of Urban Reef said: “ We get people from as far a-field as London, setting up their laptop for the day – just so they have the view, good coffee and food and the creative vibe that oozes from the restaurant. The beach has to be the most inspiring place to be if you’re trying to get some work done which is why we are encouraging people to use the space this winter.”

The restaurant on one of Britain’s most famous beaches, has triple height glass frontage flooding the restaurant with natural sunlight– banishing those winter blues that can grab hold of some office workers.

Even the Urban Reef creative team base themselves in an adjacent 1960’s beach ‘pod’ which was regenerated and updated by the creative fashion designer and manufacturer – Wayne Hemingway – co-founder of Red or Dead.

Ask Mark: Why are you letting creative types use your space for free?

Urban Guild announce charity partnership with Dorset Children’s Foundation

Some of the families and staff from the Dorset Children’s Foundation.

Urban Guild are proud to announce their charity partnership with the Dorset Children’s Foundation (DCF). The local restaurant and hotel group have chosen to help the Boscombe and Southbourne based local charity to help improve the lives of local sick and disabled children in Dorset.

The Foundation’s motto is ‘big enough to make a difference, small enough to care’ which is something that touched Urban Guild’s owner Mark Cribb – “I’m always a bit cynical about charities as some of them spend too much on admin and wages but the Dorset Children’s Foundation are doing amazing stuff at minimum cost, where every penny that gets donated goes to the kids. It’s the little things that change children’s lives and we’re going to be working with them to help improve the lives of local sick and disabled children.”

The DCF have three successful charity shops in Bournemouth which cover all their modest overheads, so every single penny that is donated goes to helping the children. They provide more than medical care and facilities – they provide the chance for children to have a great quality of life, sadly in some cases, only for a limited amount of time.

Patsy Hallmey – a trustee of the charity said: “We are thrilled and excited to have Urban Guild as one of our charity partners. As a well-loved local company, we believe they will greatly help move the charity forward with their support. The more poorly children we can help the better. Mark Cribb from Urban Guild really understood our ethics as we’re not corporate and we deal directly with children, parents, hospitals and surgeons to do whatever is necessary and possible to help enhance every step pf the way.”

The DCF donations help sick children to gain improved movement, overcome isolation, which in turn benefit their self-esteem and helps them to play a larger part in the society around them, be that with family or at school.

Bournemouth Air Festival

#GetHomeHappy with our handy guide

The Bournemouth Air Festival is amazing! It’s free to attend and great fun. This year is the 10th year so to make sure you have the BEST time and #GetHomeHappy we’ve put together our guide with tips, hacks and advice for you.

  1. Unlike most Festivals – the Bournemouth Air Festival is FREE! So, you can spend your pennies on spoiling yourself with some delicious food and drink at Urban Reef Restaurant! (well you didn’t think this guide would be entirely objective and impartial did you!)
  2. Use the Park & Ride – essential if you don’t want to waste time searching for a car park space! Park & Ride can be found at Kings Park (Thu / Fri / Sat & Sun), Redhill Park (Fri / Sat & Sun) or Littledown on Saturday only.
  3. If you are a plane fan of the Air Fest and want front row ‘seats’ and cliff-top views, head for the East Overcliff, midway between the piers. It’s where the display is centred so you’ll have the best vantage point as well as the commentary. It’s also where the Red Arrows and the Blades line up for their grand entrance to the display.
  4. Whilst you are on the clifftop you can check out the new location for the Jon Egging memorial. It’s a beautiful sculpture and a fitting tribute to the Reds pilot.
  5. If you are more of a casual observer and like a nice free parking spot, head to Southbourne Beach, park on the clifftop and you can sit in a lofty spot on the dunes or get down to the waters edge for a wide view of the bay. You might even walk past Urban Reef and the Wood Oven, perfect for a coffee, lunch, a quick pint, or takeaway pizza. Yup, we did it again 😉
  6. Don’t forget ear defenders for little ones (and big ones) that are sensitive to loud noises.
  7. Alum Chine is also a great spot, because lots of planes turn here, including the Red Arrows and you can get some cracking photos of the pilots. We would recommend dropping into Jenkins & Sons on your way there for breakfast. There’s another one 🙂
  8. If you want to get up close head up to Bournemouth Airport, you’ll see the Red Arrows take off in formation (it’s why they use Bournemouth Airport for their summer base with the long, wide runway) and you’ll get a bonus display as they return after the main display.
  9. If you fancy getting on board one of the Navy vessels anchored in the Bay you can normally get tickets if you’re quick or if you are feeling lucky, head on to the pier – you might get a cheeky seat in place of a no-show.
  10. There is as much to do on the ground as there is going on in the air, all the Forces will have their villages on the beach. Try on an SAS rucksack, see a challenger tank do it’s stuff or witness the beach landing, it’s awe-inspiring.
  11. Don’t dash off after the planes have landed…understandably the roads and rail routes in the town get a bit chocca straight after the last display. So we say – Get Home Happy – stop for a drink, feed the kids, even get your head down, we’ll look after you.
  12. Always. Wear. Sunscreen (and sunglasses, if we get lucky and Summer pays a visit)
  13. Away from the beach, bars and restaurants will be quieter. Drop into Jenkins & Sons in Penn Hill or Urban Beach Hotel in Boscombe for a bite to eat or a refreshing drink, take part in our Mini Air Fest and pilot a plane or two yourself.
  14. Buy a souvenir programme to read up on all the amazing aircraft and ships at the Air Festival. You will also have access to an online up to the minute timetable – (only available to those with programmes) You will also be helping to raise funds for the military charities as each programme includes a donation to the charities.
  15. To celebrate 10 years of the Bournemouth Air Festival there will be a very special ‘Very Vintage Sunday’ on the East Overcliff. With vintage aircraft in the skies and cars on the ground – you will be treated to performances of skiffle, swing & lindy hop. Sounds like fun!!
  16. If you do fancy a swim in the sea during the Air Festival – pick a spot opposite Urban Reef as the other areas between Boscombe Pier and Bournemouth Pier will be an exclusion zone as the aircraft fly above.
  17. If you’re bringing little ones with you – grab an LV=Kidzone wristband from the Tourist Information Centre at Pier Approach – so if they do wander off they will be easily re-united with you.
  18. Stay during the day and through to the evening to experience Night Air with more performances in the skies with lights & flares and amazing musical entertainment on the beach front, through the gardens and on East Overcliff. Not to be missed!
  19. Follow @bournemouthairfestival Facebook page as they update it by the minute with useful information about what’s happening at the festival and they’re pretty hot at replying to your queries too.

Smugglers & Pioneers II

Isaac Gulliver – legendary smuggler

We’re proud to announce the second craft beer in our Smuggler & Pioneers range – ‘Gulliver’ is here. Each of our series of ales are inspired by a local smuggler or pioneer. A gang of us went over to local brewery Eight Arch Brewing in Wimborne, Dorset and got hands on with a mash tun, helping to brew this one. We hope you like it.

Mark Cribb said: “Since the launch of our first bottled ale last year – named ‘Tregonwell’, we have had fantastic feedback from our customers. They love the fact that they are drinking something exclusive to the venue and locally brewed. So ‘Gulliver’ will be a big hit with craft ale fans and newbies that like a tasty tipple. There’s been a huge growth in local brewing in Dorset over the last couple of years and we’re thrilled to be part of it.

We are passionate about introducing people to real beers, both ales and lagers, made by real people – not giant international brands. There’s better choice and bigger flavours now and we want people to discover this for themselves.”

Steve Farrell – owner and brewer at Eight Arch Brewing Company said: “Gulliver is a pale ale brewed with a combination of European, American & Southern Hemisphere hops combined for a fruity yet crisp finish, ideal to drink in the sunshine! Urban Guild has been a big supporter of ours since we started brewing in early 2015 so when asked to brew a beer exclusively for them it was a yes straight away.”

The new bottled beer is also available at Jenkins & Sons and Urban Beach Hotel.

Sunrise Yoga Sessions

In June at Urban Reef

We’ll be launching NEW ‘sunrise yoga sessions’ in June to celebrate the start of the summer season. Popular yoga teacher Jenny Stewart will be teaching Hatha Flow Yoga to early risers on the top floor (hopefully the balcony if weather permits) of the restaurant with it’s stunning views of the bay and also on the beach at Boscombe.

The yoga sessions on the 5th and 12th of June will start at 7.15-8.15 and will be perfect for beginners and those that want to experience mental wellbeing before starting the day – leaving you feeling happier and revitalised.

Yogis can expect to feel energised and ready for the day ahead, as Jenny’s style of yoga provides a great stretch and strengthens the body. Jenny will guide yogis through a unique sequence that promotes both a dynamic and relaxing experience. The class will incorporate aspects of traditional Hatha Yoga – such as breath, postures and relaxation – whilst challenging coordination through movement.

Jenny said: “The location of Urban Reef Restaurant and the amazing view, will be an inspirational place to teach yoga to those that want to feel energised and invigorated before they start their day. When the weather starts to get warmer we will also hold the classes directly on the beach outside the Restaurant.”

After the yoga session finishes, the yogis will be able to take away a freshly blended Green Reviver or Carrot Boost smoothie which comes as part of the class package. Classes can be booked now for the 5th of June or the 12th of June.

New ‘Paddle through’ take away

plans for Boscombe Beach

The Urban Guild group are hoping to create another first for Bournemouth Beach with a ‘paddle through take away’ to increase business to The Wood Oven.

A planning application is currently being prepared by the Urban Guild group to develop a ‘venetian style’ water way from the sea and across the promenade direct to The Wood Oven on Boscombe Beach. The concept idea means that Stand Up Paddleboarders and kayakers won’t even need to put down their paddles in order to enjoy one of The Wood Ovens delicious take away pizzas.

Mark Cribb – founder of Urban Guild said: ‘The idea of the paddle through take away is very similar to a fast food drive through except we do it with water and paddle boards. We already deliver our wood-oven cooked pizzas to homes within four miles but being by the sea on Boscombe beach means that half the area is too wet for our delivery bikes and car. This way we are maximising the number of customers that can enjoy our takeaway, allowing them to paddle right up to our door to place their order.’

The planning application which the Urban Guild group hope to have completed by 1st April, will form part of the rejuvenation of Boscombe Beach which saw the launch of a Mini Golf on the pier last year with golf balls that feed the fish!
